Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

If your cruise itinerary includes Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, you're in for a great port day. Whether you're the type of cruiser who wants to relax by a beautiful pool with a frozen drink or you're ready to explore waterfalls, beaches, and colorful city streets, Amber Cove has something for everyone.

One of my favorite things about this port is that you don't have to spend money on an excursion to have an amazing day. You can easily stay inside the port and still enjoy a relaxing Caribbean experience, or head into Puerto Plata if you're looking for adventure.

Here's everything you need to know before your ship docks.

Can You Stay at Amber Cove Without Booking an Excursion?

Absolutely! One of the biggest reasons cruisers love Amber Cove is that you can have an incredible day without ever leaving the port. As soon as you walk off the ship, you'll find one of the nicest cruise port pool areas in the Caribbean.

The Amber Cove Pool

The resort-style pool is free for cruise guests and is only a short walk from the ship.

You'll find:

  • Plenty of lounge chairs

  • Palm trees and tropical landscaping

  • A large swimming pool

  • A swim-up bar

  • Shallow areas for kids

  • Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains

It's the perfect place to spend the afternoon if your goal is simply to relax. If you'd like a little more privacy, cabanas are available to rent. They're a great option for families or groups who want shade and a dedicated place to unwind.

Can You Use Your Carnival Drink Package at Amber Cove?

This is one of the questions I get asked the most. While the pool is free, food and drinks are not included. There are several restaurants, snack stands, and bars throughout the port where you can purchase food and tropical drinks.

Shopping at Amber Cove

Even if shopping isn't normally your thing, it's worth taking a walk through Amber Cove's shopping village.

You'll find a nice mix of local vendors and souvenir shops selling:

  • Dominican rum

  • Premium cigars

  • Handmade jewelry

  • Local artwork

  • Coffee

  • Chocolate

  • T-shirts and cruise souvenirs

The shopping area is clean, easy to navigate, and only a few minutes from the ship, making it perfect if you only have a couple of hours in port.

Things to Do in Puerto Plata

If you're ready to explore beyond the cruise port, Puerto Plata is about a 20-minute drive away and offers several popular attractions.

Pink Street

If you've spent any time on cruise Facebook groups or Instagram, you've probably seen photos from Pink Street. The bright pink buildings, flowers, and colorful decorations make this one of the most photographed spots in Puerto Plata. It's fun, vibrant, and perfect if you're looking for those vacation photos everyone will ask about.

Umbrella Street

Just around the corner is another famous stop—Umbrella Street. Hundreds of colorful umbrellas hang overhead, creating one of the most recognizable photo spots in the Dominican Republic. There are also cafés, shops, and plenty of places to grab a cold drink while you're exploring downtown.

Visit a Chocolate Factory

The Dominican Republic is famous for producing high-quality cacao, so visiting a local chocolate factory is a fun stop. Most tours let you see how chocolate is made from bean to bar, and yes—you usually get plenty of samples. It's a great excursion for both adults and kids.

Tour a Rum Factory

Rum is one of the Dominican Republic's most well-known exports. Factory tours give you a chance to learn about the history of Dominican rum, see how it's produced, and sample several varieties. If you enjoy local culture (and maybe a good cocktail), this is definitely worth adding to your day.

Best Amber Cove Excursions

If you're looking for something more adventurous, Amber Cove offers plenty of excursion options.

Some of the most popular include:

  • Catamaran cruises

  • Beach escapes

  • Snorkeling trips

  • ATV adventures

  • Waterfall excursions

  • Cultural city tours

  • Horseback riding

  • Ziplining

No matter your travel style, there's an excursion that fits.

Ziplining at Ocean World

If you're an adrenaline junkie, ziplining at Ocean World is one of the top-rated excursions near Amber Cove. You'll soar above tropical scenery while taking in incredible ocean views. Many excursions also include access to Ocean World's marine park, making it an excellent value if you want to spend the entire day there.

Is Amber Cove Worth Getting Off the Ship?

Without a doubt—yes. Amber Cove is one of the easiest Caribbean ports to enjoy because it offers something for every type of cruiser. If you want a relaxing day, stay at the complimentary pool. If you love sightseeing, head into Puerto Plata. If adventure is more your style, book an ATV ride, catamaran cruise, or ziplining excursion. It's one of those ports where you really can't go wrong.

My Best Amber Cove Tips

Get to the Pool Early

The best lounge chairs fill up quickly, especially when multiple ships are in port.

Bring Cash

Small bills are helpful for tipping, shopping, and buying from local vendors.

Book Excursions Ahead of Time

Popular excursions can sell out well before your cruise arrives.

Stay Hydrated

The Caribbean sun is no joke. Bring sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and wear a hat if you'll be outside for long periods.

Save Time for Shopping

Even if you're heading into Puerto Plata, leave yourself a little extra time before boarding the ship to browse the shops inside Amber Cove.

You may find the perfect souvenir—or a bottle of Dominican rum to bring home.
